The Loss of a Parent

A week and a half ago, I got a call in the early afternoon. My mother had not been in good health for a while. The call alerted me to come to her home and do it today. Her health was deteriorating rapidly. I did. Dropped everything and drove over to her home where I found her unresponsive to my voice. Her look at me was blank. I held her hand, told her I loved her and gave her a big hug and kiss. It is very difficult to see a parent in that state knowing they do no recognize or hear you. I sat by her bed for hours. Holding her hand, telling her funny stories that always made her laugh. The nurse said that she still had her hearing. So, I kept talking. Hoping for some sign that she knew I was there. But, it didn’t come. Very late that evening the nurse suggested we go home. Now, my family had also come and stayed for hours. Very close friends had also come to say their good byes. At that point we all left, planning to come back in the morning. At 2 am I received a call from a family member who was living with her. My mother had passed. All of a sudden I felt so sad that she did not recognize me or possibly hear what I was saying to her only a few hours before.

The one thing that is important for everyone to realize is that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Take care of business today. Say the words that you fear will be difficult. Have no regrets…….

Until the next time…..may your days be bright with laughter and filled with an abundance of love
